About Your Staff Organizers

The organizers of the Massachusetts State House Employee Union are legislative staff just like you. We represent various offices in the Senate, the House of Representatives, and joint committees and offices. Like you, we’ve experienced the triumphs and challenges of working within the State House, and we see opportunities for improvement that can only be reliably achieved through unionization — just as many of our public sector peers across the country have done.

As State House employees, we simply ask for the right to collective bargaining; clear and comprehensive contracts; well-defined roles and responsibilities; freedom from harassment and discrimination; equity in aspects of work; a healthy and supportive workplace; and a unified voice when the time for negotiations arise.

While many of us choose to organize anonymously in order to maintain protection and privacy for ourselves and our legislators, some of us are able to be more open about our organizing affiliation. We welcome all legislative staff interested in getting involved at any level. Join us

About IBEW 2222

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 2222 represents thousands of workers in the greater Boston area. State House Employee Union organizers selected IBEW as its partner to support unionization efforts and the entity to represent the State House Employee Union upon unionization.

IBEW 2222 was selected, in part, because they do not have a significant number of bills before the legislature, as many labor organizations do. Furthermore, Oregon’s legislature recently unionized with IBEW, as did the Warren and Kennedy campaigns and the Massachusetts Democratic Party.

Similarly to many unions, IBEW would receive 1% of a union members’ annual base pay and $22 per month per union member. However, dues will not be collected unless the first contract is ratified, and successful union negotiations would yield much larger increases in annual base pay than IBEW would collect.

About Our Supporters

We are so grateful for the scores of congressional delegates, state legislators, current and former statewide office holders, municipal officials, organizations, and individuals who have endorsed our right to unionize!

Among these supporters, we are particularly appreciative of Senator John Keenan (@SenJohnFKeenan) and Representative Patrick Kearney (@RepKearney), who have filed bills to extend collective bargaining rights to Massachusetts legislative employees. The legislation, An Act to collective bargaining rights for legislative employees (S.2014 and H.3069)provides the legislative staff the same right as nearly every other public sector worker in the Commonwealth: the right to decide for themselves whether or not they would like to unionize. We would also like to thank all the co-sponsors of the bill.
